Worth knowing about exchange rates
- The rate you see is not the rate you get. Published rates are the mid-market rate — the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are quoting. Your bank or card adds a margin on top, typically between half a percent and four. Use this to know what a fair price looks like, then compare.
- For an invoice, record the date. Rates move daily. If you are billing in one currency and accounting in another, the rate on the invoice date is normally the one that matters, so note it on the document rather than converting again later at a different number.
- Some currencies are pegged. The Saudi riyal, the UAE dirham and several others are fixed against the dollar, so they barely move against it and move exactly with it against everything else.
- Round at the end, not in the middle. Converting each line of a quote separately and rounding as you go produces a total that does not match converting the total. Convert once, at the end.
